Zomato introduced “Pure Veg Mode” and a “Pure Veg Fleet” on March 19th for vegetarian users. This allows users to see vegetarian restaurants, and deliveries will be made by a deliveryman in a green uniform. However, this idea was not met with enthusiasm and received severe backlash from netizens as many people criticized it on various platforms.
They think it might be unfair because it separates vegetarian and non-vegetarian options as many people think that it may make vegetarian seem weird or bad. It can also slow down deliveries because of having separate delivery people for vegetarian orders. Netizens wonder whether this idea is environmentally friendly and if Zomato should focus on improving other things instead of spending time and money on this.
Deepinder Goyal Reveals The Background of Change in Stance On ‘Pure Veg’ Mode
Eventually, after facing the backlash, Deepinder Goyal, the CEO of Zomato, along with his team, scrapped the whole idea of wearing green uniforms. However, they still stuck with the idea of choosing a vegetarian restaurant.
In a conversation with NDTV, Deepinder Goyal talked about the “Pure Veg” feature, He said that they came up with this idea from customer feedback, including a survey involving over 1,600 respondents. He stated, “We did a large survey of people who are more than 50 years old. An overwhelming majority said they needed a veg-only option and preferred veg-only restaurants. It was a large customer segment… So, we launched it.” Goyal said that they hadn’t anticipated such a negative reaction, as around 72 percent of respondents indicated a desire for veg-only delivery.
Deepinder informed the news outlet that he and his team spent the next 20 hours on a Zoom call, figuring out how to address and fix the situation. He told NDTV, “We were on a Zoom call for the next 20 hours, just trying to fix anything that we needed to fix. Please note that this Pure Veg Mode, or the Pure Veg Fleet, doesn’t serve or alienate any religious or political preference.”
